The Daily Update...

-Bill Watterson
31st of Aug 2023

Thu Aug 31 2023, 11:02:45 pm CET The last day of August (still 58 minutes left of it) was a good day. I can not complain if everyone that you know survived the day without too much of drama or receiving any bad news. It was also a manageable day at work with a nice ending - a nice call with my a few of my good colleagues in US. I can not forget to send details of some interesting places in Belgium (will be easy as they are interested in beer and the history of 2nd world war) as one colleague will travel to France and Belgium during her holiday.

J's girlfriend K left for the airport to travel to Italy today. We already received the first update from her location; looks really nice! J. had some time to practice on his upcoming performance - he will play guitar at a party in the weekend - and played from his playlist for his biggest fans. His parents thus. It sounds fantastic, I must say. I actually recorded parts of it and will try to find a way of sharing it here with you soon. I think I need to edit it (removing the sounds from over excited parents in the background etc) a bit before though.

OK, now I am off to bed. It will be an early morning tomorrow again...

28th and 30th of Aug 2023

Wed Aug 30 2023, 7:27:45 pm CET It's been a couple of days again, but it's not been too much to handle at work. A lot but manageable. For H. it is all starting up and there is a lot's been going on there for weeks. For me I have been already been working some time and I am trying to connect back to my hobbies - some of them at least. We have also been busy with J's last exams - guidance and coordination and upcoming travels. Interesting how difficult it is to get Dirham (currency of Morocco), insurance (something girlfriend K first highlighted) and ...well, just being parents having a son going to an "underdeveloped country where they all want to kill you". That is how it feels at least. Overprotective? Who can blame me in the current situation that we're in...

Puhhhh, anyways. Girlfriend K. travels first (leaving tomorrow from us) to Italy and J. will meet her in Milano a week later and from there they will continue to Marrakesh after a couple of days. One day I also want to see Marrakesh, but it is absolutely not a priority. There are so many cultures that inspires me and give something back that I prefer to invest my time in.

For the rest, I can inform you that I have been able to do some 3D printing again. Oh, I continued the filament spool holders and then I found something new; I found a great screwdriver holder Check this out, a fantastic 3D print. A little bit of stringing, but that is easily removed and something you have to expect. I printed the mounting pegs and the 5 hours 3D print job turned out great. for the Skådis pegboard Not because that I am Swedish, but I love the Skådis pegboard system. Such a cool and inventive idea! Check it out here... system. I love it!

26th and 27th of Aug 2023

Sun Aug 27 2023, 4:30:29 pm CET Today was a very Sunday-like Sunday - slow and relaxed. For us it feels like the summer is really over and we are heading into another period of work- private life rhythm. Another chapter is around the corner about to start... J is studying for his last exams for this term, then he'll be traveling with his girlfriend to Marrakech - with an extended stopover in Milan, Italy. Fantastic (but, as a father, I am a little bit questioned of the safety aspects when it was suggested to take an added insurance for Marrakech ) !

I have been doing some research and investigation, really digging deep into the details Read more about the details of setting up Thunderbird. One thing that struck me after this "journey" is that you can really configure it and the only limitation is... well, you. , about the Thunderbird email client. This time I thought that I would check why I always turned it down before, why did I select another email client? Once I made the decision to change to eM Client Read more about eM Client here. It's performant and packed with functions to increase productivity! as my email client of choice at home, we never regretted it. Well, I thought that the best to do after have spent so much time in all the research, is to actually collect all the findings and share it on Medium and get something , not only adding to my own knowledge, in return. An article is in the making...

Now we are enjoying a luxurious evening with an extended aperitif in front of the TV. I hope to continue watching the Uncharted Read more about it on IMDB! movie with J. on Netflix later on.

23rd until 25th of Aug 2023

Fri Aug 25 2023, 1:17:51 pm CET Today is a dark and grey weather here. One of those days that never really starts, it's like the morning lingering on the whole day. The sun never really goes up it seems.

Last night there was lightning and thunder with heavy rain. It culminated just when J was taking the tram from Antwerp to go home. He missed one tram, the other was cancelled so it got late last night. We were not in bed before 01 am o'clock. The late night together with the dark and grey morning were reasons why we overslept this morning. I am so ready for the weekend!

I have some small techie things that I wanted to document, one being recent findings about email clients. But that is for later. Now I have to jump into a call, one of the few that is not cancelled due to holiday's...

Fri Aug 25 2023, 9:59:07 pm CET I am always interested in finding the best application in a specific area. Take for instance email client applications... Recently it's been again the time for checking out email clients and as always, I have something for Thunderbird. But every time it lets me down on the performance - the alert message "not responding" The exception message popping up far too often! comes up too often. When the development halted some time back I left it alone for a while and then all of a sudden Mozilla stepped in and the community and interest started again. I was one of them. This time I really tried to understand the reasons behind the issues. I read a lot of articles, watch videos and really gave it a second chance. I think I am starting to figure how it all hangs together. How the IMAP protocol works opposed to POP, server- and client side refresh and so much more. Very interesting indeed! This time I will give it some more time...

21st and 22nd of Aug 2023

Tue Aug 22 2023, 2:47:38 pm CET Yesterday I had a very busy morning but a more relaxed evening in relation to the amount of scheduled conference calls. Today is it just the opposite - relaxed morning and busy evening. I am not sure what I prefer. Both options are nice as it's a luxury I do not have often.

H. picked up the photo album The photo album is thick like a real hardcover book. It's great - well made and good quality. yesterday she created from all the pictures from the holiday in Sweden. It's really nice done, how great it is to see all those pictures and remember the times there. Amazing how fast you forget the details and how long ago it seemed. She just completed the other photo album from our time in Greece. That will also be great to see...

The plans for the evening is to go out and have dinner the 4 of us - J. and girlfriend K. will also join us.

20th of Aug 2023

Sun Aug 20 2023, 5:32:15 pm CET Today we could really enjoy the nice weather and we did it from the comfort of our property. We didn't once need to leave our home for that. That's crazy! Yesterday evening J could enjoy the beautiful city of Antwerp with friends. Bollekesfeest Read more about the event of the year in Antwerp. It was really showing off the nice side of Antwerp - a beautiful evening and night in all it's glory! is the summer event of the year in Antwerp.

H. and J. - completely busy studying - were actually the most energetic and did some serious chores around the house. But at least I could finalize/resolve the issues that I have been struggling with for a couple of days. I will not bore you to death with the details, but now all is working in the connection with email routing, domain traffic and related services. It was really a moment of eureka... One support guy (the second that I was in contact with) at Namecheap spotted the issue. It got to the point where I had to draw a diagram/flow Just to give you an idea. I have saved the drawing to my HowTo folder on the network. for clarity.

The plan is to enjoy a steak with fries on the terrace this evening. I am looking forward to that so extremely much...

Sun Aug 20 2023, 7:05:33 pm CET Oohhh, I almost forgot, the stay in Prague is booked. I found a brilliant apartment We are really looking forward to explore Prague. It's on my list of cities I want to see... via Airbnb and it seems fantastic. It has a huge terrace overlooking the city. Now it it all booked and I am getting great tips especially from my Mastodon community/friends. It will be great to share the time with my family, including J's girlfriend K. Sat Aug 19 2023, 3:24:43 pm CET So far it's been a very relaxed day. It's a strange weather today - gray, humid but extremely warm. Where did the energy go?

We are doing stuff around the house, more the administrative type of chores. I was supposed pay some bills, but the app (everything is an app these days) has stopped working. It is the only way of paying the bills too... J. is studying again for his upcoming Marketing exam next week. H. is working on the photo-album from the trip to Greece. The photo-album from Sweden is already done and we should get it on Monday. It feels like the holiday was such a long time ago... I need more holidays.

Talking about holidays; we are actually looking into our little city trip holiday in October. That will be great in the autumn darkness to have some change of scenery. We are planning a city trip to Prague, flight tickets are already booked and my holiday request at work was approved yesterday. The only thing still open is to book the stay; will we do another Airbnb?

Sat Aug 19 2023, 3:57:24 pm CET I am still struggling with getting the Brevo and MailJet services working. The Brevo SMTP service is now working great. I still have one issue left though. Not sure if it might work better if I use Cloudflare to do the DNS records there instead. Anyway, I will see what tech support at Namecheap will say... At least I have learned a lot about SPF, DKIM, MX and TXT DNS records.

17th and 18th of Aug 2023

Fri Aug 18 2023, 8:02:26 pm CET It feels great with the weekend starting now. Friday, yes! Workwise, was it not too bad today. I could focus on my planned action items and some admin tasks. Yesterday however, was really heavy, I had no time with anything except attending calls and writing the minutes (to remember what we agreed on etc) from them.

J had his last exam today - MS Excel - for this week. Next week there are two more ...both in one and the same day. I picked him up earlier today and I saw at once how tired he was. He's just exhausted after the week of studying and everything he is busy with. I remember, as soon as you have a serious relationship it all changes. Especially for a guy! But it was such a treat having him in the car talking about how nice it was meeting up with his friend (his very best friend G.) and to be able to just being boys together. Eating, enjoying a beer and talking...

Fri Aug 18 2023, 8:16:16 pm CET I am trying to get Brevo (or MailJet) working. I followed all possible setups, guides, tips and tricks. I have even been in contact with the support and I have a support case that has been raised to the technical team. It seems it's something REALLY complicated. There are two main issues; one is being able to use the SMTP service, just to send emails (at the time of writing this post, it's been resolved. I have a very positive experience with Brevo support). I have a little Python program that checks if a webpage was updated. If that's the case it will send an email with the details.

The other open issue is getting my domain (mathiaspihl.com) authenticated. For what ever reason I am not able to validate it with the DNS records that I have to enter at my domain registrar Namecheap.com. I even raised a separate support case with them as well... The goal is to be able to send email with the domain accordingly.

Wed Aug 16 2023, 9:50:46 pm CET It's been a busy work day today. Meaning, it's been a day full of conference calls, a day that ended with a 2 hours "kick-off" call for a new huge project.

On a positive note, I also completed the official holiday request by submitting the request. It's always a nice feeling, such a definite completion. Like the dot after a sentence. Yes, more holiday to look forward to in the year. This time it was for something that we are planning for the last weekend in October.

In between, I have done some interesting 3D printing projects as well. One was the 3D printing filament spool holder which I completed today. It turned out great. Such a satisfying result. The other one - which is actually completing now while I am writing this post - is an old 3D print that I have to make again by request. A clip to close bags.

Tue Aug 15 2023, 11:26:14 pm CET There were a couple of days - 3 to be specific - since I last wrote here. Today we have a day off where I live. A lot of the European countries on the continent are doing the same thing. I worked yesterday, but I had the feeling that most of the people took the Monday off and made a long weekend of it.

At least I had the day off today. It was great of course It is, however, ONE day off and a lot to do. J studied for 2 exams tomorrow - accounting and French. Then the plan was for him to re-allocate to Antwerp in the evening where he'd meet up with K. in the evening. His parents - us thus - casually "hanging around" as we pretended to have nothing else to do, to support him where we could. The plan was to act as if it WAS planned thus. Much like his studding for Excel a day earlier. I think our masterplan worked.

We have just watched our latest tv series on Prime. With some doubts, the TV series (the man in the high castleRead more about it on IMDB. It is a rather intriguing storyline at least!) actually might be OK. Watchable, at least. I also managed to complete a 4 hour 30 minutes 3D print job today - part one of a two print job project. I am printing a 3D printer spool holder that will be mounted on the IKEA Skådis wall tool holder. The first part Look how nice it came out... 12th of Aug 2023

Sat Aug 12 2023, 5:13:44 pm CET It was a nice and relaxed start of the day, at least for me that is. H. was busy in her head planning out the day - we are having people over as a belated birthday party.

The people will start arriving soon, so we are busy with the final touch. The table Nice table decoration by H. Note the Swedish theme... is really looking nice . I took some time for a 3D print and I could also do some housekeeping in the home IT infrastructure. I was going over the domains and sites that I have registered and tumbled across Cloudflare that I activated for one of my domains (owningev.com). It's more to try out the services and especially the tunnelling solution - to create a sort of home server hosting. It's actually REALLY cool and works brilliantly! You actually installing a local service (provided by CloudFlare) which will open a tunnel into the local network. Then you have to setup/configure the local URL that will be exposed as a, in my case, subdomain to my existing registered domain.

Fri Aug 11 2023, 7:48:54 pm CET Enjoying the Friday drink (Prosecco), olives (vacuum sealed, the real stuff from Kalamata, Greece) and some nice blue cheese (Bleu d'AuvergneRead more about this great cheese on Wikipedia., one of our absolute favourite) with crackers. It was a very heavy day at work today, insane many calls. And not just calls, but heavy and demanding calls, if you know what I mean. It's a lot of work and takes a lot of energy, but it is very rewarding for me at the end of the day. At least if it's a positive outcome...

The bigger concern today however was the result of our dear neighbour lady D. It's not bad, but not brilliant news. The fantastic news is that they have found the root cause and it is high chance of being treatable. It all comes down to that there are still old cancer cells, before transfusion, still hidden in the Cerebrospinal fluid Read more about it on Wikipedia. I will not write the details, but it was first noticeable during our dinner last weekend and that is now why she is on her way, painful and winding but still a path of recovery. Times of worry are back again...

J and K are united again. They have been apart for a couple of days - K was with her family on the coast of Belgium and J has been mainly busy with studying. Their plan is to meet up with friends tonight and then tomorrow we are celebrating H's birthday with family. That'll be nice!

9th and 10th of Aug 2023

2023-08-10 19:57:41 CET Today was a beautiful day with sun and blue skies. Unfortunately I had to work and it was a rather busy day. I could enjoy the nice weather from inside... Between the calls and work I did sneak out to sit for a second in the sun (and, let's say, get a perspective from all the madness. I could truly write a book, a sequel... 10 times over).

We are eating alone tonight (a fantastic pasta), J joined up with friends in Antwerp supporting a friend's performance - who is a rapper I suppose. He was really looking forward to it after a day of studying.

On a more serious note; tomorrow is a very critical day for our neighbour ladies. We should have the results back by then. If we feel the stress, What a stressful day it must be for lady M...

2023-08-10 22:28:18 CET I just had to do some updates on Namecheap.com - my domain registrar of choice! What a fantastic service, I renewed 3 of my 8 domains and just had a browse through the services that they provide. It is of interest since I saw that Google is stopping the Google Domain service (still need to be confirmed as I could still see that they provide it). Anyway and no matter what, Namecheap is just the greatest (speaking also with experience of their support service)!

I am keeping myself busy trying not to think too much of the fact that H is by neighbour lady M. and I wonder how things are going there...

Tue Aug 8 2023, 11:36:52 am CET The day started today with a bang - the window cleaner Y, our cleaning lady A and both H and J are home. It was crowded here and full of activities the whole morning .

Unfortunately there are some worrying news from the next door ladies. We did not yet get any conclusive, but it is always worrying receiving unforeseen changes and that she has to go into the hospital for further investigations . It might be a minor complication, but there is this little risk that it's something worse. That is the biggest shit with cancer...

5th of Aug 2023

2023-08-05 13:17:16 CET It was a relaxed morning, it is hard to beat the feeling of a relaxed weekend breakfast with great coffee. Today J is studying for the exams (K travelled back to her parents yesterday evening) and we are doing some relaxed chores around the house. Later this evening we are invited for dinner by our neighbor ladies. I am looking forward to catch up with them again.

We have started looking through all the images taken during our holiday - the travels to Sweden and then also to Greece. Didn't know we had take well over 1500 pictures... The goal is making photo albums out of them. It will surely be a huge task.

I re-discovered three pictures and the memories came back of one moment in Sweden. I believe I mentioned that we passed by my childhood house, the very first one we lived in. I mentioned about it to my mom when we spoke earlier today, so I decided to attach them to an email and update them all about that specific moment as it's a rather cool story, in short; the son of the person who bough the house from us now lives there with his family. It was also so cool that I could show my son the place I grew up in, the house My childhood house where we first lived, where I spent my first 10 years. my dad built and registered 1973.

2nd until 4th of Aug 2023

2023-08-04 17:23:48 CET Today was a day that took some getting used to. The fact that it's Friday made it a whole lot easier! I am still getting back from holiday and into to the routines. I am already missing the holiday...

You might notice that it took longer than normal for an updated post here. Fear no more, I am back. No, on a little bit serious note; I was sick and completely out on Wednesday. I started feeling "strange" at 3am in the morning. I basically sat on the toilet (and I spare you the details what happened there, but the diarrhea was spectacular ) between 4am to 2pm on Wednesday... It's much better now, but I am still feeling weak from it.

I have just completed a 3D print which I am a bit excited for. I hope to update the post with pics of it soon. But now we are about to leave for dinner at the parents in law.

31st Jul and 1st of Aug 2023

2023-08-01 20:33:30 CET I am back and I have the first work day behind me. With about 5000 emails in backlog and some open support cases assigned to our team it already busy day. Additionally there were some interesting developments in my latest big project that needed some urgent "coordination"...

The trip back from Greece went extremely smooth, everything including packing and leaving the house in Greece, returning the rental car, taking the flight back and getting the car out of the long-term parking in Amsterdam airport and driving back home. We even could perfectly time it to also pick up J's girlfriend K who was waiting for us with home cooked dinner (so sweet) at the tram station.

The routine changed dramatically and started for all of us suddenly today, J with his studying for the exams, H with all the preparation and daily work and I jumped back into the daily work. I must say that it all went great for all of us. Important is to be able to keep the balance and the focus, but not get lost in the daily work too much. We just have to remind our self's about the fantastic time we had and what really is important in life.
